On March 17, Milliken celebrated with the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) at the school’s 24th annual Townes Toast with a Twist event.

The school honored Milliken with the Townes Award, which is presented annually to South Carolina organizations, businesses or individuals “who take aspirations of innovation and leadership to the highest level in research, development, technology, business, education or public service.” The award was named after Dr. Charles H. Townes, an American Nobel Prize-winning physicist and inventor who was born in Greenville, South Carolina.

Winners of this award “have gone beyond the basic requirements of their professional positions to raise the quality of science, mathematics and technology education in South Carolina.” In 1999, visionary Mr. Roger Milliken received the Townes Award for his unparalleled leadership and vision, making this the second time this honor has been bestowed upon Milliken & Company.

Kim Bowman, CEO of the GSSM Foundation, noted that, “Since the company was founded more than 150 years ago, Milliken has been a leader in innovation across the globe. Their core values and strategies perfectly align to pave the way for new discoveries designed to improve the way people live and work. We could not be more honored to celebrate Milliken’s innovative leadership and success with this year’s Townes Award.”

Milliken thrives on a commitment to knowledge-based investment and creating innovations that ‘do good’ for people, their communities and the environment. Repeated recognition from such esteemed institutions as GSSM and Ethisphere®, which named Milliken as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies® for the 10th consecutive year, confirms that our company can have a lasting, meaningful impact on the world.
