“Art and creativity are crucial, whether you’re a mathematician, a scientist or an artist.” - Cornelia Parker

STEAM Building PictureIn building the next generation of innovators within our communities, STEAM activities and education are of vital importance to fostering well-rounded children. Once known as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), arts have become an integral part of the equation - supporting creativity and encouraging critical thinking skills. At Milliken, we champion the STEAM concept by creating diverse teams that design meaningful innovations through complementing perspectives.

Simple art activities can inspire youth to bring their inventive ideas to fruition. From upcycling household items to expressing points of view through paint and markers, discover, with us, four art-related activities for the whole family to enjoy this summer.

  1. Infuse eco-friendly materials in your project by repurposing cardboard tubes from paper towel and toilet paper rolls. With these simple supplies, your child can create butterfly bunch wall art, a jewelry holder or even a cake stand.
  2. Summer vacations can create lasting memories. Ask your child to draw or painta scene that inspired them from your latest trip with bold and bright colors.
  3. Transform an everyday juice pouch into a stomp rocket. This craft combines recycled art and engineering by using the power of compressed air in an empty juice pouch to launch a colorful straw into the air.
  4. Explore the way materials come together to construct something new. Build a functional piece of art with legos, or challenge your child to build a tower with toothpicks and marshmallows.

These are just a few of the many ways you can incorporate artistic endeavors into your summertime experience. Explore more family STEAM activities here for a summer that is every bit as educational as it is fun.
