New Milliken Eco-Elegant Textiles Allow Consumers to Breathe Easy at Home

The average person takes 23,040 breaths a day - in our homes, at work and school, and in the larger home we share, Earth. For up to 90 percent of them, we are indoors. From the floor coverings on which children play to the couches families curl up on to watch the latest blockbuster, the quality of the everyday materials that we surround ourselves with is ever more important.

Innovators at Milliken saw this as an opportunity to provide a healthier experience for all.

After more than a year of research and development, Breathe by MillikenTM has come to life: a collection of beautiful, soft, eco-friendly, and durable performance upholstery fabrics that repel everyday stains and are easy to clean, sustainably designed, and responsibly manufactured.

Breathe fabrics are designed to reflect today's lifestyles and the values of the consumer, our customer, and Milliken, who share a common belief: little things, like the decision to make sustainability a priority, recycling and reclaiming used materials, and one’s choice of sofa fabric, can make a big difference.

“Today’s consumers are better informed and more concerned about product content than ever before – who makes it, what it is made of and how it is made,” shared David Smith, vice president, Engineered Performance Products, Milliken & Company. “Every aspect of this product was designed to address this concern. Consumers can breathe easy knowing their beautiful furniture is protected from stains and wear in a much more sustainable way.”

Breathe fabrics allow consumers to relax and enjoy their home. In addition to time-saving functional benefits, the sustainable fabric is designed and responsibly manufactured using natural or recycled fibers and a remarkable plant-based water repellent. In fact, Breathe textiles are the industry’s first fluorine-free performance fabrics compatible with both natural and manmade fibers.

All Breathe by Milliken™ fabrics have also achieved GREENGUARD® GOLD certification, which gives assurance that products designed for use in indoor spaces meet strict chemical emissions limits, contributing to the creation of healthier interiors.

The highly durable, eco-elegant cotton and recycled fiber fabrics of Breathe by MillikenTM meet the demands of today’s busy families, repelling everyday stains and resisting pilling for a pet- and kid-friendly home.

The fabric was designed fiber-forward to achieve this caliber of performance that raises the bar of industry standards. Every aspect, from the fiber used for the yarn to the final touches, was specifically created to develop a product that performs as well, if not better than, existing performance fabrics in a much more sustainable way. Breathe fabrics use natural and renewable fibers or recycled fibers made from plastic bottles and a remarkable plant-based water repellent. Most importantly, unlike other stain repellent technologies that contain some levels of fluorine and fluorine derivatives, Breathe fabrics are fluorine-free to create a home environment with less exposure to added chemicals.

Breathe fabrics are sold directly to furniture manufacturers and retailers who specify fabric and will be available at select national retailers beginning in Spring 2017.
