Disruptive Innovation: Vis Divide Optimizes Underground Network Cables

By 2030, more than 9.6 million people will call London home - a staggering growth of 1 million people in only 15 years. New York City is currently experiencing the highest population growth since the 1920s, and from 2000 to 2012, both Raleigh, North Carolina, and Austin, Texas, grew more than 40 percent.

As populations boom in urban and city environments, the existing bandwidth in these areas to accommodate communication and power systems is incredibly strained. Milliken Infrastructure found a revolutionary solution.

To add in more bandwidth, undVis_Divide_from_Milliken_with_an_occupied_cable_2.jpgerground cable networks traditionally only allowed one cable per conduit. With every new addition of bandwidth came new construction, costs, materials and most noticeable, civil disruption. The Milliken Infrastructure team rethought the entire design of underground cable networks for a simple solution: increase conduit capacity.

Vis™ Divide, a segmented communication conduit, revolutionizes the way in which underground network cables are optimized. The first of its kind, the multi-cable piece doubles the capacity of traditional conduit by segmenting the cable with a fabric divider, which allows for multiples cables to be placed in a single conduit without the risk of cable-over-cable damage. Although the physical conduit is novel, Vis™ Divide installs in the same manner as traditional HDPE conduit and does not require special tools or skills.

For cable installers, Vis™ Divide provides efficiency and ease of deployment, saves space, simplifies cable replacement and requires smaller directional boring. For network owners, it helps lower long-term project costs by increasing conduit capacity, improving productivity and lowering operational costs, including boring and trenching, transportation and replacement. For the community as a whole, it eases construction hindrances for less disruption of daily life.
